Chiropractic Therapy for Children
Chiropractic therapy is safe for children. Chiropractors correct many common childhood ailments with this form of care, and that is why more and more parents are turning to chiropractic therapy as a natural alternative for their children’s health care.
Why do my kids need Chiropractic Therapy?
Many parents think their children don’t need chiropractic therapy. After all, they’re young, and haven’t developed any spine issues yet, right? Wrong. As children grow, their spines experience many physical stresses and subluxations that can occur at any point in your child’s growth and development.
Spine problems can begin before the child is born. Fetal positions like the breech position can cause undue stress on the spine. The tiny vertebrae can be jammed or lodged out of place in these cramped quarters. If the baby has a difficult passage through the birth canal, this can further complicate the spinal issues. Cesarean deliveries can create additional spine trauma.
All these issues may compromise the infant’s health. Ailments like sleep problems, breastfeeding problems and colic often stem from nervous system issues and spinal misalignments.
Chiropractors can check a newborn’s spine and make slight adjustments that can help the baby’s health and prevent developmental issues like holding up the head, sitting, crawling and walking.
As children grow, their spines can become misaligned by growth spurts and typical bumps and falls that are a common theme in childhood. One of our biggest issues today is that children sit for long periods in the classroom and often carry extremely heavy backpacks. All of these issues contribute to spinal misalignments.
How is chiropractic therapy done?
A chiropractor will review your child’s medical history and ask you to describe any issues or complaints. The doctor will also perform a thorough physical examination. Gentle manipulations might then be done to correct any pediatric spinal problems.
Chiropractors are trained to manipulate infant, pediatric and adult spines. They use very specific adjustments with extremely light fingertip pressure to adjust the infant’s or child’s spine and cranium. These manipulations do not use excessive force, but rather use a light finger touch to restore mobility to the joints. Sometimes the chiropractor will use a gentle hand-held instrument to achieve a very specific correction.
Can I tell whether my child has spinal problems?
Generally, it is difficult for parents to recognize a spinal issue in their child. However, if your child’s head or neck range of motion is not optimal or he or she has one shoulder higher than the other, these can all be signs.
If your child suffers from any one of these common childhood disorders below, this can be a sign of spinal misalignment:
- repeated ear infections
- frequent colds or a sore throat
- growing pains
Will the adjustments hurt my child?
Chiropractic therapy is generally painless. However, if the child has an injury, the area that needs adjusting may be sensitive to the touch. Spinal misalignments strain muscles, but once the vertebrae are aligned, the muscle tension eases, and the injury can heal more effectively.
Parents often seek chiropractic therapy for a child who has suffered an injury or physical trauma of some sort. Keep in mind that pain or symptoms don’t immediately appear after a spinal misalignment.
Sometimes a popping sound is heard during the adjustment, but don’t be concerned—this is not the sound of your child’s spine. Instead, it is just trapped air escaping. Your child will not be hurt.
Furthermore, children respond much faster to the correction than an adult does, so children’s issues can generally be corrected much faster and with fewer adjustments. Naturally, the number of adjustments needed will vary depending on many factors.
